Pasta against Stress

Pasta helps addressing stress. Food can be eaten for survival, pleasure or enjoyment. However, it can also function as a … comfort medicine! Winter blues is very likely to “meet its match” in a delicious dish of pasta with aromatic tomato sauce and melted cheese. Indeed, there are specific foods that contain substances which are related to the relaxation of the nervous system and to the adjustment of our mood. The term “comfort food” which is routinely used in the United States, is not just that. It is also used to indicate the food that helps each one of us feel better after a long day. When we are sick or tired, when everything seems dark, we usually look for peace of mind in simple flavours of beloved ingredients which enclose the happy memories of our childhood.

Our brain composes serotonin (a hormone which controls our mood and functions as anti-depressant) more easily when our diet is based on carbohydrates, that help the stabilization of blood sugar and obstruct rapid changes of energy levels. Reversely, the consumption of foodstuff which contains simple or refined carbohydrates (sugar, glucose, fructose etc.) can cause rapid changes of blood pressure, thus, leading to faster spiritual and body fatigue.

A dish of pasta with your favorite sauce, sprinkled with lots of cheese and herbs, will definitely make you feel better!

Pasta against Diabetes

Carbohydrates are the primary source of glucose for the human body. Glucose is a “fuel” that provides energy to the brain, the cells, the muscles and the organs. Due to the fact that it contains complex carbohydrates, which do not allow the rapid change of blood sugar levels, pasta is a foodstuff with low glycemic index (GI).

GI indicates the increase in the blood sugar levels two or three hours after consuming the food. Studies, which test the effect of a diet with low GI in comparison to one with high GI have shown that the latter increases the risk of diabetes type 1 and 2 to both men and women as well as of cardiovascular diseases.

Pasta against cholesterol

Pasta, when consumed without creams, sauces, eggs, meat and other substances, can contribute to lowering cholesterol in our blood. That is because it is rich in phytosteroles, “enemy” of the cholesterol. Phytosteroles, which only exist in foodstuff of herbal origin, have molecular shape similar to that of LDL (bad) cholesterol. Thus, due to their structural similarities, they “compete” with cholesterol and its absorption from the bowel. At the same time, it has been proved that phytosteroles do not affect the levels of HDL- (good) cholesterol. Recent research has shown that wheat, sesame, pistachios and sunflower seeds have the highest content in phytosteroles in comparison to other seeds.

Pasta against osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a serious disease which threatens both men and women and is attributable to the reduction of bone density. While until recently we knew very little of the influence of various nutrients on the bones, latest studies of the University of Harvard among people between 69 and 93 years of age have proved that:

  • Males who used to include mainly cereals, pasta, vegetables and fruits in their diets had increased and/or higher bone density in comparison to the ones that consumed mostly meat and sweets.
  • Women whose diets were rich in cereals, pasta, vegetables and fruits drastically increased their bone density (by 12%), in comparison to women who mostly ate meat, different kinds of sweets and other foodstuff of animal origin.
